Barcelona have confirmed that midfielder Gavi will undergo surgery on his injured meniscus after conservative treatment failed to resolve the problem.
The 21-year-old has not featured since late August, with the club announcing on Monday that he will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on Tuesday. The injury affects the same knee in which he suffered a torn cruciate ligament and meniscus damage in 2023.
According to Barcelona, Gavi initially underwent a “conservation course of treatment” before being subjected to “intense sports stress tests” on Sunday. Following medical evaluation, the decision was taken to proceed with surgery.
“In order to guarantee the best possible recovery and return to competitive action, this Tuesday Gavi will undergo an arthroscopic examination,” the club said in a statement.
Gavi previously spent a year on the sidelines after undergoing surgery in November 2023, raising fresh concerns over his long-term fitness. Barcelona did not provide a timeline for his return.
Meanwhile, the club also confirmed that Fermin Lopez, who featured for 30 minutes in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Getafe, has sustained a muscular injury to his hip and will be out for around three weeks.
The two injuries add to Barcelona’s growing list of absentees, which already includes Lamine Yamal, Alejandro Balde, and goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.
